Osborn Wilsonâs 1863 Diary of the Civil War
Friday, January 2, 1863. H.B. and I sleep together without shelter. Get up at beat of drums for roll call. Canât get my boots on in time to go to roll call.
Capt. McC. is acting Major of the Regt. and says orders must be observed while he is in command. Go to QM to try to get clothing this morning, but he says I have my share. Head aches severely. Read some in Literary Messenger.
Come over to the twenty-fifth. The forty-fourth are going to Gen. J.âs old Division. Jas. Gum has got a transfer for to the twenty-fifth from the thirty-first.
The late Richmond papers give an account of a Confederate victory near Mofausboro (sp). Victory is said to be certain at that point. Vicksburg still holds out.
Saturday, January 3, 1863. Sleep in Hiteâs tent soundly and get up early. Morgan is on guard last night and today. Morning pleasant.
Go over to the twenty-fifth to see friends before they start. Get piece of bacon and a stool. Come back, change clothes. Write letter to Nan and note to Miss A.E.C. on Morganâs letter. Dorson pays me ten dollars, which he borrowed of me. I pay Zech Gum some borrowed money.
Give letters to Mr. Gurato (sp) to carry. Our Regt. goes on picket tomorrow. I give R.K.D. my place in camp yard to go on picket.
Papers say Rosencrants (sp) is retreating. Day very pleasant. W.S. has to go to the station tomorrow with the ord. (ordinance) train.
Sunday, January 4, 1863. Get up before day and eat breakfast just at daylight. Prepare to start out on picket. Morgan concludes to stay in camp. Only about two of the company come. The balance remain in camp. We march very fast, and my boots hurt my feet. They get very sore.
Maj. McC. has comd. of the Regt. The country is very sandy. We march about 8 miles and get there at half past 11:00 a.m. Pass Port Royal, an old dilapidated town. Are on picket about one mile below town watching for gunboats. Can see Yankee pickets on the King George side of the Rapahannock.
The country looks delightful over there. We are not far from Fort T. Co. Day cloudy and cool. Health good. We relieve the Seventh La. Regt. It is getting very cloudy.
Monday, January 5, 1863. Go to bed at twelve oâclock last night. Sleep with Capt. G. Latter half of the night quite cool. Nothing exciting occursâno gunboats appear. Yankee pickets are on the other side of the river.
Eat biscuit and raw bacon for breakfast. Some of the boys make sassafras tea. Read a chapter in Testament. Commenced reading it through on the first Jan. Read in Southern Literary Messenger. Day fine and warm. Gen. Early comes near our post. Help get wood.
Our picket post below here and the Yankees talk across the river. We listen at them a long time. Boys play bluff. The river is more than three-fourth of a mile wide here. The tide comes in at twelve.
